At The Blue Breeze Inn, balletic, Chinese-trained dumpling chefs flip, fold and pinch in a state of zen as fragrant fireballs sizzle up from the rows of flaming woks. Standing tall amongst the Hong Kong hustle is Kiwi head chef: Che Barrington. After journeying through China, Che brings the tingle of Sichuan, the savoury warmth of cumin and the hit of black rice vinegar and chilli oil to modern Chinese as you’ve never tasted before. Che delivers the highlights at ACL, including the Blue Breeze Pork Bun.
Hawker & Roll
Celebrity chef Josh Emett and business partner Fleur Caulton’s newest restaurant, Hawker & Roll, will bring their famous hawker rolls to Auckland Eats this year. Emett and Caulton have a string of outstanding restaurant ventures to their name across the nation, with Emett also being a familiar TV face as a Masterchef judge. Drawing on Malaysian flavours straight from the streets of Penang, Hawker & Roll will be offer three varieties of hawker rolls—flaky and delicious roti stuffed with Pulled Sticky Pork, Chicken, or Eggplant for vege lovers—at Auckland Eats 2018.
Lowbrow is the newest inner city venture from ACL/Auckland Eats veterans Kyle Street & Jordan Macdonald formerly of Fed Deli and more recently the innovative Culprit. Their fresh approach to contemporary fast food all day dining sounds perfect to bring to the ACL menu, before their new eatery opens later this year at Queens Rise, Auckland Central.
Lovers of Italian food will know all about Sergio Maglione’s exploits in the city. Since arriving as a fresh faced young pizza chef from Napoli over 20 years ago, he established his name with Toto’s pasta and pizzas, and his most recent opening Farina in Ponsonby captures the lively spirit of his home town’s voracious appetite for food and fun.
Café Hanoi has been a success story in Britomart from the day it opened its doors and chef Nathan Houpapa introduced the zesty flavours and taste of modern Vietnamese food to the precinct. Crowds continue to flock to this ever popular downtown eatery.
